CBD Oil — Are The Benefits Claimed Too Good To Be True?

By | May 30, 2022

Many people today could use a miracle cure, especially those who suffer from chronic pain, overwhelming anxiety, symptoms related to cancer, and/or neurological disorders. It’s not surprising that CBD oil keeps popping up in search results. Can we really expect CBD oil to have a positive impact on our symptoms the way we want? Paul Terpeluk (Doctor of Internal Medicine) explains why CBD oil might not be as effective.

What’s CBD?

The cannabis sativa flower contains more than 100 chemical components, including CBD (or cannabidiol). But it’s THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), not CBD, that’s the main psychoactive compound in cannabis that gives you a euphoric high. CBD is extracted from hemp, which is a form of cannabis that has very low levels THC. It doesn’t get your high. CBD oil is simply a product containing CBD extract and an oil such as coconut oil. It is typically used for topical purposes. It is important to note that the 2018 Farm Bill has made it legal for CBD products to be produced and sold in the United States. However, they must contain less than.3% THC.

It is still illegal according to certain state laws. Dr. Terpeluk also explains that the market is saturated with CBD products, including bath bombs, gummies, creams, lotions, tinctures, and oil. None of these CBD products are FDA approved and may not contain 100% pure CBD. As of mid-December 2021 only one cannabis-derived product and three cannabis-related products have been approved by the FDA. All of these can be safely obtained with a prescription from a licensed health provider. Dr. Terpeluk says that there is no regulatory oversight on the majority of CBD products. “Most CBD products you buy, unless they have a strict marketing campaign and quality control that states it’s 100% CBD, are contaminated with other cannabinoids including THC.”

What Are The benefits Of CBD?

However, there are many studies that show CBD has wide-ranging benefits. It is important to understand the benefits of pure CBD. This complex system of neurotransmitters, enzymes and receptors plays an essential role in our central nervous system development. This system regulates a number of functions including motor control, pain, appetite, inflammation, and memory. We may be able to better understand the effects of CBD in these areas and how it affects a wide range of conditions and disorders by studying more closely.

Supports Neurological-Related Disorders

The FDA approved Epidiolex for treatment of various seizure disorders including two rare conditions, Lennox-Gastaut and Duvet syndrome. Numerous case studies have shown that CBD may be beneficial for patients who are intolerant to anti-epileptic drugs. Dr. Terpeluk says that epilepsy is characterized by a threshold within the brain that becomes excitatory. If this threshold is exceeded, you experience a seizure. CBD increases this threshold.

Another study suggests that CBD may be helpful in managing symptoms such as multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, and Alzheimer’s disease. It also has neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory properties. Many studies suggest that CBD is not the only thing that works. It may also be a combination CBD and other cannabinoids that helps to reduce symptoms.

It Might Help With Pain Relief

CBD interacts with neurotransmitters in the central nervous system and could alleviate pain from inflammation, arthritis, nerve damage, and peripheral neuropathy (peripheral neuralpathy). A four-week trial showed that people with nerve damage in the lower halves of their bodies experienced a marked reduction in intense, sharp pain following application of a topical CBD oil. Dr. Terpeluk explains that all of the anti-pain medications affect a section of our pain system. “No one wants opioid addiction so it’s important to find a cannabinoid that is not addictive and can relieve chronic pain. He cautions that there is still much to be done, and whether CBD can cause long-term pain relief.  Dr. Terpeluk says, “If you take it in an unregulated manner, you don’t know how much it contains, and you don’t know how it affects your body outside of your pain.”

It Can Help With Anxiety And Mood Disorders

Depression and anxiety can have severe effects on your daily life. They may also cause emotional and physical stress. This could then lead to sleep disorders, high bloodpressure, chronic pain, and heart disease. Although it is still too early for us to fully understand the effects of CBD on anxiety and mood disorders. However, individual studies have shown positive results.

Researchers found that CBD 300 mg significantly decreased social anxiety in one study of 57 men who were given either oral CBD or placebo for 90 minutes prior to participating in a simulated public speaking exam. There are many treatments for anxiety and mood disorders, including counseling and talk therapy. Dr. Terpeluk recommends that you get to the root cause of your anxiety. Dr. Terpeluk says that it is easier to deal with anxiety by looking at the root causes rather than trying and find medications to reduce it.

It May Help With Symptoms Of Cancer

CBD could help with nausea, vomiting, and weight loss due to chemotherapy treatments. Three cannabis-related products have been approved by the FDA to alleviate these symptoms and increase appetite in people with AIDS. All of these drugs contain some amount of THC, or synthetic THC, and they are not just CBD. Some studies have shown that CBD may help reduce the size of cancerous cells, breast Cancer, Prostate Cancer, and other forms of cancer. Similar to other areas of research, more human clinical trials are required to fully understand the effects CBD has on different types of cancer.

What Side Effects And Risks Are There With CBD?

Dr. Terpeluk advises that you don’t know the exact purity of CBD oil purchased online or from local vendors. It could have been mixed with other cannabinoids such as or the deadly delta-8. It’s mysterious. Dr. Terpeluk says that CBD oil is not as harmless as people think. CBD oil can be dangerous if you use it because you bought it from the market. It could contain THC.  CBD can also be used to treat side effects of a number of medications including antidepressants, pain medication, and antipsychotics. There could be side effects such as:

  • Problems with coordination
  • Dizziness.
  • Drowsiness and fatigue.
  • Diarrhea.

Best advice? Talk to your doctor before you consider CBD oil or any other CBD products. This will help you decide if it is safe for you, and to make sure it does not have adverse interactions with any of your medications.
